In-Service training for teachers and other educational staff (IST)


The In-service training gives you an opportunity to improve and develop your practical teaching, coaching, counseling and/or management skills with the professional support of Slovene experts. You can apply for a grant to participate in a training course in Slovenia at the National Agency in your country.

Slovene training courses are included in a European database of courses which enables you to search quickly and easily for an appropriate training opportunity. To search for courses visit the database, choose Slovenia in the field “Country of a training event” and press the “Search” button. Otherwise, you can search by training theme, date, target audience, education sector, etc. It is not necessary to complete all these fields before searching.

There are three application deadlines in a year - January, April and September –, referring to fixed training periods.

The objective of the Comenius In-Service Training (COM IST) is to help improve the quality of school education (including pre-school and vocational education) by enabling staff to undertake training in other European country.  In-Service Training provides opportunities for teachers to develop their practical teaching, coaching, counseling and/or management skills. Courses must have a strong European focus and must relate to the applicant’s professional activities in any aspect of school education.

The training course must take the form of:
•    a structured professional development course for school education staff with a strong European focus in terms of subject matter and profile of trainers and participants, lasting at least 5 working days, or
•    a placement or observation period (eg. "job shadowing") in a school, in industry or in a relevant organisation involved in school education (e.g. NGO, public authority), or
•    participation in a European conference or seminar organised by a Comenius Network,
•    Comenius Multilateral Project, a National Agency or a representative European association active in the field of school education.

Duration: The training course can be from 5 working days up to 6 weeks, taking place in a country other the one where the applicant lives and work.

Who can apply: School education staff (teaching and non-teaching), also unemployed teachers and teachers reentering the profession after a period away from teaching. Persons engaged in the training of teachers.

How to apply for a grant: the application must be submitted by home organisations of individuals to the National Agency in their home country, but where no home organization exists (in the case of former or unemployed teachers), the application may be submitted directly by individuals to the National Agency in their home country.
