Grundtvig assistantship


This action enables present or future staff involved in adult education - whether formal, nonformal or informal - to spend from 12 (+1 day)  to 45 weeks as a Grundtvig Assistant at an adult education organisation in another European country participating in the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP).

Grundtvig Assistantships are designed to give current or future adult educators the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the European dimension to adult learning; to enhance their knowledge of foreign languages, other European countries and adult education systems; and to improve professional and intercultural competences.

If you would like come to Slovenia as a Gurndtvig assistant you should find a Slovenian organization who would will host you before sending an application to your National agency. You can check for available organizations at your National agency .

The tasks to which an Assistant may contribute include:

  • assisting in facilitating learning, or with some aspect of managing adult education;
  • providing support for adults with special educational needs;
  • providing information on the UK and assisting in the teaching of English;
  • introducing or reinforcing the European dimension in the host institution;
  • initiating, developing and assisting in the implementation of projects.

Assistants should be fully integrated in life at the host organisation. As Grundtvig Assistantships are open to all adult education staff, the level of experience and seniority of participants can vary considerably. Depending on his/her specific profile, an Assistant maeither:

  • play a mainly ancillary role at the host organisation, assisting in various teaching or management activities; or
  • take full responsibility for one or more courses or a particular aspect of management at the host organisation.


Deadline: Your application form must be posted and emailed to your National agency no later than 31 March 2010

Duration: As a Grundtvig assistant you can be from 12 weeks (+1 day) up to 45 weeks.

Who can apply: Any current or future adult educator belonging to one of the categories indicated in the "Specific eligibility rules" below, can apply for a Grundtvig Assistantship grant. If you work for an adult education organisation, your application should be submitted through and countersigned by the legal representative of that organisation, which must be a legal entity; but where this is not appropriate, your application may be submitted directly to your  National Agency e.g. if you are a former teacher, or you wish to enter the field of adult education.

In addition, applicants must fit one of the following categories:

  1. Persons at any stage in their career who are already working on a part-time or full-time basis in any part of the non-vocational adult education sector (formal, non-formal or informal), including volunteer staff as well as those who are formally employe.
  2. Persons involved in the training of adult education staff (who must themselves be working with adult learners).
  3. Persons who can demonstrate a clear intention of working in adult education but who are currently in some other labour market situation (work in another field, have retired, are absent from professional life due to family responsibilities, unemployment etc.), whether or not they have worked in adult education before.
  4. Persons who have completed a qualification leading to a career in adult education and intend to start working in non-vocational adult education.
  5. Students who have completed at least two years of study leading to a degree or equivalent qualification in adult education / andragogy or who are enrolled in Masters level studies in this field.
  6. Other education staff at the discretion of the UK National Agency.

How to apply: Before sending an application to the National agency in your country, you have to find a host organization that is willing to host you. You have to ask them for the letter of intention that you will annex to the application form.  Take into consideration the deadline of the action and send an application to the National Agency in your country from which you will also be granted.
